Maloyaroslavets lies in Kaluga Oblast, southwest of Moscow, on the high bank of the Luzha River. The town is best known for the Battle of Maloyaroslavets in October 1812, when Russian forces blocked Napoleon's army from retreating south, forcing it back along the devastated Smolensk road.
