Manhiça lies north of Maputo on the EN1, the national highway that runs up the length of Mozambique. The town sits on slightly higher ground beside the broad, flat floodplain of the Incomati, one of the main rivers of the country's south. On a map, the highway forms a strong spine through the centre, with a loose grid of streets and neighbourhoods on either side.
Beyond the built-up area, the floodplain takes over. It is farmed for sugar cane and other crops, and the map shows long field boundaries and drainage channels running across it.
