Manzanillo spreads around the Bay of Manzanillo and the neighbouring Bay of Santiago, divided by the rocky Santiago Peninsula. The old centre sits at the southern end, squeezed between the harbour and the hills, while hotels and neighbourhoods run north-west along the beaches. On a map the coastline dominates: long curves of sand, headlands, and roads following the shoreline between them.
Behind the port lies the Laguna de Cuyutlán, a long coastal lagoon stretching south-east along the coast.
