Maracena lies just north of Granada on the Vega, the broad fertile plain that the city has farmed and irrigated for centuries. It is part of Granada's metropolitan area, and from above you can see the space between the two places narrowing, with housing, ring roads and industrial estates spreading across what used to be open farmland.
The older core is a tight knot of narrow streets around the church and main square. Newer districts surround it in more regular blocks.
