Marhanets lies in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, near the lower Dnipro. Its name comes from the Ukrainian word for manganese, and the town grew up to work the Nikopol manganese basin, one of the largest deposits of the ore in Europe. On a map, industry sets the outline.
