Marktredwitz lies in northeastern Bavaria, in the Fichtelgebirge district of Wunsiedel, only a short distance from the Czech border. From above, the town gathers around a compact historic centre, with the small Kösseine river running through and railway lines converging from several directions. The town has an unusual history: for centuries it belonged to the Egerland and was administered from Cheb in Bohemia, becoming part of Bavaria only in the early nineteenth century.
