Massafra stands in the province of Taranto, on the limestone slopes that fall from the Murge towards the Gulf of Taranto. Its defining feature is the gravina, a deep ravine that runs straight through the town. From above, the old centre and the newer districts sit on either side of a winding gap, and the map shows clearly how the settlement had to grow around a natural wound in the ground.
The ravines around Massafra are known for their rock-cut churches and cave dwellings, carved into the soft stone over centuries.
