Matala sits on the upper Cunene River in Angola's Huíla province, and on a map the river is the first thing you notice. It pools behind a dam beside the town, then carries on as a narrower channel through open savanna. The built-up area stays close to the water. Its loose pattern of streets thins out quickly into fields, tracks and scattered homesteads.
The Matala Dam was built in the colonial period to generate power and supply irrigation, and it is central to what the town is. Canals and farmed plots spread out from the river.
