Mataram is the capital of West Nusa Tenggara and the largest city on the island of Lombok in Indonesia. It lies on the western plain of the island, facing the Lombok Strait, with the land rising gradually east toward the slopes of Mount Rinjani. On a map the city spreads from the coast inland in a broad, fairly even pattern.
The urban area has grown together from several older towns, including Ampenan on the coast and Cakranegara inland, which developed under Balinese rule.
