Seen from above, Matinhos is mostly a single long edge. Streets run parallel to the Atlantic in narrow bands, and short cross streets drop down to the sand at regular intervals. Behind them the built-up area thins quickly, giving way to forested slopes that climb toward the Serra do Mar.
