McAlester is the seat of Pittsburg County in south-eastern Oklahoma, in hilly country within the Choctaw Nation. The town grew where railway lines crossed. From above, its core is a regular grid of streets aligned with the tracks, surrounded by residential neighbourhoods and by highways heading out toward lakes and wooded hills.
Coal mining drove its early growth in the late nineteenth century and drew workers from many countries to the surrounding mines. McAlester is also known as the home of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and of a large army ammunition plant nearby.
