Meishan lies at the southern edge of the Chengdu Plain, south of Chengdu, where the Min River widens on its way towards Leshan. The river is the defining feature of the city's layout. Its broad channel, sandbars and low islands run the full height of the frame. The urban area has grown on both sides, with bridges carrying roads across at intervals.
The older part of the city keeps a tighter street pattern, and newer districts spread in wider, more geometric blocks with parks and lakes.
