Midwest City stands just east of Oklahoma City, and from above it is a textbook example of the American mile grid. Section-line roads divide the land into large squares, and within them curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs fill the blocks. The city was built in the 1940s as a planned community for workers at the new air depot that became Tinker, with developer W. P. Bill Atkinson behind much of the early layout.
