Mikkeli sits on the northwestern waters of Lake Saimaa, Finland's largest lake system, and water shapes its map on almost every side. The centre follows a clear rectangular grid, typical of Finnish towns planned in the nineteenth century. During the Second World War, Mikkeli housed the headquarters of the Finnish Defence Forces under Marshal Mannerheim, and a museum in the former headquarters recalls that period.
