Mino sits where the Nagara River leaves the mountains of central Gifu and widens into a stony channel. On a map the town reads as a narrow band of streets pressed between the water and forested slopes, with roads following the valley rather than any imposed plan. The town is best known for Mino washi, a handmade paper produced here for well over a thousand years; the Hon-Minoshi technique is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
