From above, Miramichi is shaped by its river. The Miramichi runs broad and slow through the city, and the settled land follows it in two long bands on the north and south shores. Streets run back from the water in short, regular steps, then thin out into woodland and farm roads. On a map the river is by far the largest shape, and everything else is arranged around it.
The present city was formed in 1995 by merging several communities, among them the older towns of Newcastle and Chatham. That history still shows in the street pattern.
