From above, the Mission District reads as one of the calmest grids in San Francisco. Numbered cross streets run south from roughly 14th Street to Cesar Chavez, crossed by long north–south arteries such as Mission, Valencia, Guerrero and Dolores. The district takes its name from Mission San Francisco de Asís, better known as Mission Dolores, founded in 1776. Its adobe chapel is considered the oldest intact building in the city. On a map it sits near the corner of Dolores and 16th Street, a small footprint beside a much larger basilica, a few blocks north of the sloping green rectangle of Dolores Park.
