Morogoro lies in eastern Tanzania at the foot of the Uluguru Mountains, which rise abruptly just south of the town. On the map the contrast is immediate: the built area spreads across gentler ground to the north, while the mountains fill the southern edge with steep, largely open terrain crossed by only a few winding roads.
The street network is loose and irregular, with a small central grid giving way to scattered neighbourhoods along the main roads.
