Mtsensk lies in Oryol oblast, south of Moscow, on the banks of the Zusha river. It is one of the older towns in central Russia, first mentioned in the chronicles in the twelfth century. The town is best known through literature. Nikolai Leskov's story Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, later the basis for Shostakovich's opera, carried its name around the world.
