Nagold lies on the eastern edge of the Black Forest, in a valley cut by the river of the same name. Here the Waldach flows into the Nagold. On a map, the two valleys form a clear Y shape, and the town fills the flat ground where they join. Dense forest climbs the slopes on every side, so the built-up area looks pressed into the valley floor.
Above the town, the ruins of Hohennagold castle crown a steep, wooded hill. They are the most recognisable landmark and a common viewpoint over the valley. Below them, the old centre follows the river closely.
