Natal stretches along the Atlantic on Brazil's northeastern corner, and the Potengi River meets the sea at its northern end. The oldest neighbourhoods cluster near that river mouth, while the city runs south along the shore through a chain of beaches towards Ponta Negra. At the river mouth stands the star-shaped Forte dos Reis Magos, begun by the Portuguese in 1598, and a short way upstream the cable-stayed Newton Navarro Bridge crosses to the northern shore.
