Nellore lies in southern Andhra Pradesh, on the southern bank of the Penna River and a short distance inland from the Bay of Bengal. The land around it is flat and irrigated. The name is usually traced to nellu, the Telugu word for paddy, which suits a district known for its rice. Nellore is also the home of the Nellore cattle breed.
