Nishinoomote is the largest town on Tanegashima, an island south of Kyushu in Kagoshima Prefecture. It covers the northern part of the long, narrow island, and its centre lies on the west coast around the harbour that connects Tanegashima with Kagoshima. Tanegashima holds an important place in Japanese history. In 1543 Portuguese traders who reached the island brought the first firearms to Japan, and early Japanese guns became known as tanegashima.
