Norton lies in Mashonaland West, about forty kilometres west of Harare on the main road toward Bulawayo. It grew up as a farming and industrial centre and has expanded quickly as a home for people who work in the capital. On a map it shows residential suburbs clustered around a small commercial core, with the highway and railway passing through.
Water shapes the setting. The Manyame River flows past the town and is dammed on either side of it: Lake Chivero lies upstream toward Harare, and Lake Manyame lies downstream to the northwest.
