Nusaybin, in Turkey's Mardin Province, lies on the northern edge of the Mesopotamian plain, directly on the border with Syria. Across the frontier sits the Syrian city of Qamishli, and on the map the two form almost a single urban area divided by a straight line. Nusaybin is the ancient Nisibis, an important city in Roman and Persian times and home to the School of Nisibis, a major centre of Syriac learning.
