Oldenburg was the capital of a county, then a duchy and grand duchy, and later a free state until 1946. Its historic centre is small and oval, surrounded by the Wallanlagen, a ring of parks and paths laid out where the fortifications once stood. Inside, the streets form an irregular medieval pattern that became one of the first pedestrian zones in Germany in 1967.
South of the old town lie the palace and the Schlossgarten, a landscape park in the English style with ponds and winding paths.
