Oldenzaal is one of the oldest towns in Twente, close to the German border in the east of Overijssel. Its historic centre is unusually easy to read from above. Streets curve in rings around the Sint-Plechelmusbasiliek, the Romanesque church at the heart of town, and lanes run outward from it like spokes. The oval shape of the old core still stands out against the newer streets around it.
Beyond the rings, residential neighbourhoods spread in every direction, and the railway toward Hengelo and Germany passes along the edge of town.
