Olímpia sits on the gently rolling farmland of northwestern São Paulo state, where sugarcane and orange groves stretch in long parcels toward the horizon. From above, the town is a tidy rectangular grid of blocks, with small squares punctuating the centre and newer neighbourhoods spreading outward in lighter, looser patterns where the fields begin.
The town is known across Brazil for two things. Since 1965 it has hosted the Festival Nacional do Folclore, which earned it the informal title of the country's folklore capital.
