Oraiókastro lies on the hills northwest of Thessaloniki, a few kilometres from the city centre and above the plain that stretches down to the Thermaic Gulf. The name means beautiful castle in Greek. From above, the town is shaped by the terrain: its streets curve along the contours, residential blocks step down the slopes, and open hillside and fields remain between the neighbourhoods.
Over recent decades Oraiókastro has grown from a village into one of Thessaloniki's main residential suburbs, and many residents commute to the city.
