Parla lies about twenty kilometres south of central Madrid, on the flat, open plain that stretches toward Toledo. From above, the town looks like a well-defined urban island. For centuries Parla was a small farming village. Most of its rapid growth came from the 1970s onward, when new residential districts were built for people working in Madrid.
