Payyanur sits in Kannur district near the northern tip of Kerala, a few kilometres inland from the Arabian Sea. The land is low and heavily planted, and from above the town's roads twist through dense palm groves rather than following a grid. Rivers and tidal channels wind toward the coast, and the backwaters around Kavvayi break the land into slender islands and strips.
The town holds a notable place in India's independence movement. In 1930, during the salt satyagraha, volunteers marched to the shore near Payyanur to make salt in defiance of colonial law.
