Pétionville sits in the hills southeast of Port-au-Prince and rises from the edge of the capital's plain toward the mountains of the Massif de la Selle. It was founded in the 1830s and named after Alexandre Pétion, one of Haiti's founding leaders. It developed as a cooler, higher district above the city, and the map shows that height in the way streets bend and stack up the slopes.
The historic core is laid out as a small grid around Place Saint-Pierre and its church. This clear rectangular pattern stands out against the winding roads around it.
