Piešťany lies in western Slovakia on the river Váh and is best known as a spa town. Its thermal springs and healing mud have drawn visitors for centuries, and the layout of the town reflects that. The main spa buildings stand on Spa Island, a strip of land surrounded by the Váh and a side channel. The town centre, with its pedestrian streets and park, sits across the water on the west bank.
The Colonnade Bridge links the two. It is a covered footbridge and one of the town's symbols, and at its entrance stands the statue of a man breaking his crutch, the emblem of the spa.
