Placetas sits in the middle of Cuba, in Villa Clara Province, surrounded by farmland and low countryside. From above, the town is a regular grid of rectangular blocks, the typical Spanish-American layout with a central square near the heart of town. Streets run in straight lines toward the edges, where the built-up area gives way to fields and scattered rural roads.
The Carretera Central, the highway that runs along much of the island, passes through Placetas. For a long time this made the town a stop between the provincial capital, Santa Clara, and towns further east. Placetas is younger than many Cuban towns, founded in the nineteenth century.
