Pontypool is in Torfaen, southeast Wales, where the valley of the Afon Lwyd widens as it goes south. On a map, the town follows the river and the valley floor. The town grew with the iron and coal industries of the valley. In the eighteenth century it was known for Pontypool japanware, a type of lacquered metal.
