Portishead lies on the south shore of the Severn Estuary, a short distance west of Bristol. On a map the town is framed by water on one side and a wooded ridge on the other. Streets run along the lower ground by the shore and climb onto the slopes, while the estuary edge breaks into small headlands, including Battery Point.
The town's former dock, once used by shipping and power stations, has been redeveloped as a marina surrounded by new housing.
