Purbalingga is the capital of a regency in the western part of Central Java, lying on the gently falling ground south-east of Mount Slamet, the highest volcano in the province. The land drops toward the south, and rivers coming down from the mountain cut shallow valleys through the area. On a map the town reads as a compact centre with roads reaching outward along the higher ground between those valleys.
At its heart is the arrangement common to many Javanese regency towns: a central square with civic buildings around it and a main road running past.
