Qaraqash, also known as Moyu, lies in the Hotan oasis in southern Xinjiang, on the western side of the Karakax River. Everything on its map depends on water. The Karakax, whose name means black jade in Uyghur, has long been known for the jade stones washed down from the mountains, and together with its neighbour, the Yurungkax, it has sustained settlement here for centuries.
