Qitaihe lies in the east of Heilongjiang Province, in northeastern China, among low forested hills. The city takes its name from the Qitaihe River, the Seven Terraces River, which runs through the area. Its urban districts are shaped by that terrain, spread between the hills and linked by roads and railway lines rather than gathered into one round centre.
It is a relatively young city that grew around coal mining in the second half of the twentieth century.
