Rahim Yar Khan lies in the far south of Punjab, close to the border with Sindh. The land around it is completely flat, and on a map the city is surrounded by a network of straight irrigation canals and field boundaries that divide the plain into long, regular strips. The city grew as a market and administrative centre for the surrounding farmland, which is known for cotton and sugarcane.
