Rajin lies on the East Sea (Sea of Japan) coast in the far north-east of North Korea, within the Rason Special Economic Zone. The town is built around a sheltered bay framed by hills, and the port, with its piers and breakwaters, is the dominant feature of the map. The Rason zone was created in 1991 as one of the country's first areas open to foreign trade. Its location near the Tumen River, where North Korea meets China and Russia, gives the port strategic weight. A railway from Russia reaches Rajin, and the port has handled cargo moved along that link.
