Rājpīpla is the headquarters of Narmada district in south-eastern Gujarat and was once the capital of the princely state of the same name. It lies on the Karjan River, a tributary of the Narmada, with forested hills rising to the south and east. On the map the old town is dense and irregular, while newer areas spread along roads away from the river.
The town is known for the palaces built by its former rulers, which remain among its most recognisable buildings.
