Rāmpur was the capital of a princely state ruled by Nawabs from the eighteenth century until after Indian independence. The city lies on the plain of western Uttar Pradesh, with the Kosi river passing close by. From above, the historic centre is a dense knot of streets, while palace grounds and gardens form open, geometric spaces within it.
The best-known landmark is the Rampur Raza Library, founded by the Nawabs and housed in the Hamid Manzil palace within the old fort.
