Ratekau is a municipality in Ostholstein, north of Lübeck and just inland from the Lübeck Bay coast. It is not one compact town. It is a group of villages spread across gently rolling farmland, each with its own small core and connected by country roads. From above, it looks like a scatter of settlements on a green ground.
The village of Ratekau is known for its Romanesque fieldstone church, one of the old churches of the region's medieval Christianisation. To the north-east, the municipality borders the Hemmelsdorfer See.
