Rawtenstall is the main town of Rossendale in Lancashire, set deep in a valley carved by the River Irwell. On a map the built area follows the valley floor and climbs its sides in terraced rows, while the moors above remain almost empty. The layout still reflects its textile past. Mills once lined the river, and rows of stone terraces were built close by for the people who worked in them. Rawtenstall is also the northern terminus of the East Lancashire Railway, a heritage line running down the valley. It is also home to Fitzpatrick's, often described as the last original temperance bar in Britain.
