Reading grew up where the River Kennet flows into the Thames, and both rivers are still the main shapes on the map. The Thames swings along the northern edge and separates the centre from Caversham on the far bank. The Kennet and its canalised navigation run east to west through the heart of town, past the shopping streets and old wharves, before joining the larger river.
Around the centre, the Inner Distribution Road forms a tight loop of dual carriageway, and outside it the Victorian terraces spread in long parallel rows. Farther south the M4 cuts a straight line across the edge of the map.
