Rendsburg sits in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein, where the Eider river once formed a natural crossing and where the Kiel Canal, one of the world's busiest artificial waterways, now passes the town. On the map, water surrounds the historic core: the old town began on an island in the Eider, and the canal runs just to the south as a broad straight channel.
The Rendsburg High Bridge, a steel railway bridge completed in 1913, carries trains high over the canal.
