Rennell is one of the largest raised coral atolls in the world, lifted well above the sea so that its old lagoon became dry land and a lake. On a map it appears as an elongated island in the southern Solomon Islands, its coast unusually smooth and steep, with few inlets. The eastern part of the island holds Lake Tegano, the largest lake in the insular Pacific, which is scattered with small limestone islets.
