Rotherham is in South Yorkshire, where the River Rother joins the River Don, just northeast of Sheffield. The town centre sits on rising ground above the meeting of the two rivers, with streets closely packed around Rotherham Minster. Across the Don stands the Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge, one of only a few medieval bridge chapels left in England. The M1 and M18 motorways pass close to the town, and their junctions curve over the hills to the west and south.
