Rottenburg am Neckar lies in a narrow stretch of the Neckar valley, upstream from Tübingen. The river runs through the middle of town. The historic centre sits mainly on one bank and the older Ehingen quarter on the other, with bridges linking them. The town has been the seat of the Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart since the nineteenth century, and St. Martin's Cathedral stands at the heart of the old centre.
